House of Hackney

House of Hackney was dreamed up in a London townhouse in 2011 by Frieda Gormley and Javvy M Royle, a husband and wife team, and has grown into a family of artists, designers, producers and collaborators. Its headquarters, flagship and store are at St Michael's Clergy House in Hackney, with a second showroom in the New York Design Center.

William Morris is the brand's stated design hero, and it follows him in wanting things that are both beautiful and useful. It is a certified B Corp, and has given Mother Nature and Future Generations seats on its board of directors. Most of the range is made to order to reduce waste, using FSC certified timber for wallpaper and furniture, organically grown cotton and recycled materials in many of the fabrics, and responsibly sourced traceable wool. Its carpets, rugs and stair runners are made with Axminster Carpets.

The company calls its pieces future heirlooms, made in Britain by craftspeople in generations-old trades, which is a description we recognise.

Made to order suits reupholstery well. If a print is being woven or printed for your piece anyway, the extra fortnight buys a cloth nobody else in the road has.
