Kravet

Kravet Inc describes itself as a privately held, fifth generation American family business, established in 1918. It works only with the interior design trade, distributing fabrics, wallcoverings, furniture, carpets and accessories, and has grown from a small fabric house into what it calls a global leader.

Much of the range is made with named designers. Kravet has represented Diane von Furstenberg, Oscar de la Renta, Calvin Klein and Jonathan Adler, and its Kravet Couture line carries collaborations such as Altuzarra, drawn from Greek mythology and nature. Other collections come from museums: Museum of New Mexico is taken from the textile collection of the Museum of International Folk Art in Santa Fe.

It is also the parent of the group this cloth reaches us through. Companies House lists Kravet Fabrics Inc of New York among the persons with significant control of GP and J Baker Limited, and Kravet's UK range is sold from the same front door as GP and J Baker, Baker Lifestyle and Mulberry Home.

What it adds for us is a different accent: bold, large-scale American pattern that sits outside the English country look most of our other books share. One thing worth knowing when reading a Kravet specification: many of its rub counts are Wyzenbeek double rubs, an American test, not the Martindale figure British cloth quotes, and the two numbers cannot be compared directly.
