Upholstery and blinds for Canvey Island, chosen for the sea air
Salt air, strong light and damp are hard on cloth, indoors and in the garden. We make upholstery, curtains, blinds and outdoor cushions chosen to cope with it, from a workshop near Maldon, and bring the work to you.
Simon Houlding Upholstery makes reupholstery, curtains, roman blinds and outdoor cushions, and fits shutters, for homes across Canvey Island. The workshop is not on the island: it is at Stock Chase, Heybridge, near Maldon, about 23 miles and about 38 minutes away by the A130. Customers have left 162 five-star reviews, and an appointment can be at the showroom or in your home.
What the coast does to cloth on Canvey Island, and the answer
An island behind a sea wall sets its own tests for soft furnishings, and each one has a proper answer.

1
Cloth that fades
strong light, salt in the air
Why it happensSea light is relentless and salt air weakens the fibre, so a colour that looked deep in the shop drains and the weave tires in a room that faces the estuary all day.
What we makeWe steer toward cloths that hold colour and weave in constant light. The fabric finder narrows more than 55,000 cloths by use, so you can filter before you commit.

2
Garden cushions that stay wet
damp held in the filling
Why it happensOrdinary cushions left outdoors take in water and grow mildew, because the cloth and the filling were never made to shed rain or to dry out once the weather turns.
What we makeWe make outdoor cushions in weatherproof fabrics and foams that take the weather, cut to the shape of the seating and finished with a rain cover.

3
A sea-facing window
light all day, no let-up
Why it happensA window facing the water gets the light from morning to evening, which fades curtains and upholstery alike and leaves a room hot and glaring through the middle of the day.
What we makeA UV protection or sheer blind protects the curtains and the furniture behind it. We make roman blinds on site, and fit roller and sheer blinds.

4
A small room
crowded by heavy cloth
Why it happensMany houses here are bungalows and chalets with smaller rooms, and a full, heavy pair of curtains quickly swallows the space and darkens a room that already wants light.
What we makeA roman blind made to the reveal takes up no wall, or shutters keep the line of the glass. Both are a lighter answer than heavy drapes.

5
A tired sofa
worn through by daily life
Why it happensA sofa that has served you for years goes soft in the seat and worn through on the arms, and damp coastal air does the frame and the filling no favours over time.
What we makeWe take a piece back to the bare frame and rebuild it by hand with hand-tied springs, fibre and horsehair. See our reupholstery.
Garden cushions for a Canvey Island seating area
Replacing tired garden cushions with a weatherproof fabric makes a seating area feel new again. We cut cushions to the shape of the seating, whether a bench, a curved area or an outdoor sofa, in UV and weather-resistant cloth and foams. Simon can advise the height of the platform, since the depth of the cushion decides the comfort you get.
On one curved outdoor seating project we made the cushions to the shape of the seat and finished them with a custom rain cover, to keep them clean and dry when not in use. The same goes for boats and outdoor rooms through our outdoor living work.
Canvey Island and the mainland behind it
Bungalows and chalets
Most of the island lies below high-tide level behind the sea wall, laid out in streets of bungalows and chalets. The rooms tend to be smaller, so a lighter window dressing usually suits them better than heavy curtains.
Benfleet and Thundersley
On the mainland, Benfleet and Thundersley sit above the marshes, about 30 minutes from the workshop. We make reupholstery, curtains, blinds and shutters for homes in both, measured and fitted by our own team.
Hadleigh
Hadleigh carries its ruined castle above the marshes with a view across the estuary. Period and later houses here take the same salt air off the water, so the choices that suit Canvey suit them too.
What we make for a Canvey Island home
Blinds made on site
Roman blinds made in our own curtain room, the fabric checked by two makers before a cut, plus roller, venetian and sheer blinds measured and fitted by our own fitter.
Reupholstery
Sofas, armchairs and dining chairs stripped to the frame and rebuilt by hand, so a piece that has done years by the sea can do years more.
Outdoor living
Garden seating, boats and outdoor rooms upholstered in weatherproof fabrics and foams, with outdoor curtains in UV-resistant cloth that can be lined with a waterproof canvas.

What it costs for a Canvey Island home
Reupholstery comes in at roughly what a new piece of similar quality would cost, which is why a sound old frame earns the work and a poor one rarely does. For curtains, blinds, shutters and outdoor cushions there is no fixed list, since every window and every seating area is different.
Send a photo and a few words about the room or the garden, with rough measurements if you have them, and you will have a personal reply quoting the work on an average price fabric. Once a quote is agreed, we can meet at the Heybridge showroom or at your home on the island.

For rooms facing the water, cloths that hold their colour and weave in constant light. Salt air and strong light fade and weaken ordinary fabric over time. Yes. Outdoor cushions are made in weatherproof fabrics and foams that take the weather, cut to the shape of the seating. We can finish them with a custom rain cover to keep them clean and dry when not in use. Cushions left outdoors in ordinary cloth take in water and grow mildew, so the materials matter.
A UV protection or sheer blind protects the curtains and upholstery behind it from the light that a sea-facing window gets all day. Roman blinds are made on site in our curtain room, and roller, venetian and sheer blinds are measured and fitted by our own fitter. In a small room a blind takes up no wall.
Yes. We take a tired sofa back to the bare frame and rebuild it by hand, using hand-tied springs, fibre and horsehair, so it holds its shape for years.
