Your favourite chair, comfortable again: reupholstery for Clacton
The suite you have had for years can be rebuilt by hand and re-covered, so it holds you the way it used to. The workshop is near Maldon, and comes out to Clacton and the coast around it.
Simon Houlding Upholstery reupholsters sofas, armchairs, dining chairs and suites for homes across Clacton-on-Sea, though the workshop is not in the town. It stands at Stock Chase, Heybridge, near Maldon, about 35 miles and about 47 minutes away by the A12 and A133. A piece is stripped to the bare frame and rebuilt by hand, layer by layer, for another twenty years of use. The reviews stand at a perfect five stars on every platform.
What makes a chair easy to live with in a Clacton home
Comfort is settled by a handful of measurements, and none of them shows in a photograph of a showroom chair.
-
1
The height of the seat
how easy it is to rise
What it doesThe height off the floor decides how easily you get out of a chair. Too low and standing takes real effort; about right and your feet sit flat with your knees level. You can tell by how hard you push on the arms to rise.
What to tell usTell us how you want it to sit when you get up. What the frame allows is settled once we see the piece, and the rebuild decides the seat again from the webbing up.
-
2
The depth of the seat
whether your back reaches
What it doesThe depth from front to back decides whether your back reaches the back of the chair. Too deep and you perch or slump forward; about right and you sit back with support. You can tell if a cushion propped behind you makes it comfortable.
What to tell usSay how you like to sit, upright or settled back. We take the piece to the frame and build the seat up by hand, so the depth is set again as part of the work.

3
A seat that has dropped
the springs or the webbing
What it doesA seat that has sunk low is the springs or the webbing beneath, not the cushion on top. You feel the frame rail through it, and getting up is harder because the seat has fallen away under you. It will not come back by plumping.
What to tell usTell us where it sits low and how it feels. We re-tie the springs by hand and renew the webbing, building the support back with natural fibres so the seat holds its height.
-
4
A cushion that has gone flat
the filling has given up
What it doesA seat that has gone flat but not low is the cushion filling, worn down from years of sitting in the same spot. The support beneath may be sound; the softness on top has simply collapsed. You can tell by how little bounce is left when you press it.
What to tell usLet us know which cushions have gone and how firm you like them. A firmer seat is easier to rise from than a soft one.
-
5
The arms
they take your weight
What it doesArms at the right height take your weight when you stand, so you push down and up rather than hauling yourself forward. Too low and they give you nothing; about right and rising is steady. You can tell by whether your forearm rests level when seated.
What to tell usTell us how you use the arms when you get up. Their height is part of the frame, so what can be done is settled when we see it, and the padding is renewed in the rebuild.
Why the suite you already own in Clacton is usually worth keeping
If a piece has served you well, it is usually worth more than its replacement. Most new furniture is not built the way yours was: a good old frame has a weight and a strength that a stapled modern one rarely matches. A chair kept for years has already proved it lasts.
We take a tired piece back to the bare frame and rebuild it by hand, often better than the day it was made. That is the heart of reupholstery, and it keeps the shape and the comfort you already know rather than asking you to learn a new chair.
Suites and chairs rebuilt in the workshop
A Chesterfield brought back
A traditionally upholstered Chesterfield that had seen better days, completely restored and re-covered in a striped fabric, its character kept and its comfort returned.
A matched two-seater
A new two-seater made by replicating the design, proportion and detailing of a customer's existing three-seater, so the two sit together as a pair in one room.
Sofas re-modelled
Much-loved deep buttoned sofas re-made in a more contemporary style on their own frames, so the comfort stays while the shape is brought up to date.
Choosing a cover for a Clacton home by the sea
Pleasant to sit on
A cover you touch every day wants to feel right as much as look right. A short, dense velvet is soft yet hard-wearing, and a good wool keeps its shape and resists marking, so the piece stays comfortable to live with.
Colour in sea light
Strong light off the water is unforgiving on colour, and a shade that looks deep in a showroom can read quite differently in a bright seafront room. Browse the fabric finder and test the colour against your own window.
Samples seen at home
A swatch only means something in the room it will live in, under the light that room actually gets. Samples can be sent to your home address, so you can hold the cloth against the chair and the walls before you decide.
Curtains, blinds and shutters for Frinton-on-Sea
Frinton's wide Edwardian avenues run down to the Greensward, and the houses along them carry tall windows and generous bays. A full lined and interlined curtain suits those proportions, hung to the height the room asks for. See our curtains, made and hung by our own team.
The white modernist houses of the Frinton Park Estate from the 1930s ask for something cleaner: a simple blind or a shutter that keeps the line of the glass rather than softening it. Look at shutters, measured and fitted to the shape of each window.
“When it came to dressing our 300-year-old home, Simon Houlding didn't just deliver; they soared to First Class heights. Curtains so perfect they might as well have a passport to luxury, and our antique French sofa reupholstered to look straight out of a Parisian chateau.”

What it costs to rebuild a suite for a Clacton home
Rebuilding a piece properly comes in at about what a new one of similar quality would cost, which is why a good old frame is worth the work and a poor one rarely is. There is no fixed list, since a single wing chair and a three piece suite are quite different jobs.
Send a photo and a few words about the piece, and you get a personal reply quoting the work on an average price fabric. Once the quote is approved, an appointment can be at the Heybridge showroom or in your own home, and the cloth is chosen with you there.

Usually yes, if it has served you well and the frame is sound. A good older frame is built to last in a way most new furniture is not, so rebuilding it by hand and re-covering it keeps a comfort you already know. Send a photo and we will judge it.
Often the seat has dropped, which is the springs or the webbing giving way beneath you, so the seat falls away as you push up. A seat that feels flat rather than low is the cushion filling. The arm height matters too, since arms take your weight when you rise.
Yes. A cushion that has gone flat has lost its filling and can be renewed, while the support beneath is checked at the same time. A firmer fill makes a seat easier to rise from. Tell us how firm you like it.
Yes. We have built a new two-seater by replicating the design, proportion and detailing of a customer's existing three-seater, so the two read as a pair. Send a photo of the piece you are keeping and we will work from it.
Reupholstery usually runs a few weeks once the chosen fabric has arrived at the workshop. A clear timeline comes with every quote, so you know what to expect before anything begins. A larger suite naturally takes longer than a single chair.
Holland-on-Sea is mostly bungalows, with wide low front windows and smaller rooms. A roman blind made to the exact width shows a pattern and leaves the sill clear, or a roller blind sits neatly inside the reveal. Our own fitter measures each opening before anything is ordered.
