About Isle Mill
Isle Mill is part of the Macnaughton Group, a family company founded in 1783. It began in Dumfriesshire with four looms and a handful of local workers, in the fortified tower that is still the company logo. The business moved to Aberdeen in the early 1970s, and its move into furnishings took it to the Highland town of Keith in the late 1980s, where the mill still is.
The whole chain stays in Scotland. Design, sales, finance and IT have been at the Perth headquarters since 1999, the cloth is woven at Keith, and it is finished at Galashiels in the Borders. The weaving plant runs everything from modern jacquard and high speed Somet machines to specialist Dornier looms, and every length is inspected and mended by hand before it goes to be finished.
Yarns run from pure new wool to more complex blends containing linen, silk, mohair and angora.
A hand-mended Scottish wool is a pleasure to work with on the bench. It takes a pleat, it takes a stitch, and it does not go shiny on the arm of a chair the way a cheaper cloth will.
