About this colour
In #70423F, this shade feels like a dark oxblood-brown with a muted red core, so it holds warmth without turning orange. On a wall it absorbs a fair amount of light, giving a room a close, cocooning feel in Flat Matt, while Eggshell and Soft Sheen will bring a little more depth and reflection to woodwork and trim. In a north-facing room it can look more brown and restrained, which suits if you want the red to stay subtle. In south-facing light the red comes forward more clearly, lifting the colour without making it sharp, and it sits well beside tobacco leathers, walnut, dark oak, ink blues, and natural linens.
How to use it
Use it in a dining room, study, or on joinery where you want a rich backdrop for upholstered chairs and patterned curtains. It works particularly well with oak, mahogany, brass details, and muted reds, rusts, or claret upholstery.
A deep red-brown like this gives a wall weight and warmth without feeling harsh.
