About this colour

At #711324, Theatre Red reads as a dark, warm red with a muted pink edge, so it feels richer than a clear scarlet and less blackened than a claret. On walls it absorbs a good deal of light, giving a cocooning effect that suits larger rooms, alcoves and panelled spaces. In north-facing light it can look deeper and more wine-like, with the cooler light drawing out its berry undertone. In south-facing light it warms up, showing more red and a little more lift, while still staying firmly dramatic beside walnut, oak, brass or cream upholstery.

How to use it

It works well in dining rooms, libraries and snug seating areas, especially with dark timber, aged leather and linen in oatmeal or stone. It also suits painted woodwork where you want a strong frame around lighter walls or curtains.

A deep red like this makes a wall feel intimate and enclosed.
