Madox Madder

This shade reads as a warm, earthy red-brown with a muted depth, sitting more quietly than a bright red and absorbing light rather than reflecting much of it. On interior walls and ceilings in Signature Emulsion Paint, it can make a room feel enclosed and calm, with enough warmth to avoid looking flat. In a north-facing room it will read deeper, browner and more restrained, while south light brings out the red in it and gives it a fuller, richer presence. It sits well beside natural oak, dark walnut and painted joinery in cream, stone or soft pinkish neutrals, and it pairs neatly with patterned Morris & Co. upholstery or curtains in olive, gold and parchment tones.

Use it in a dining room, library or snug where you want the walls to feel close and composed. It works especially well with timber shelves, aged brass details and upholstery in moss green, tobacco, oatmeal or small-scale Morris prints.
