About Linwood
Linwood was founded in 1994 and is a third-generation family business based in Hampshire, named after the small New Forest village where its current directors grew up. Besides the Ringwood studio it keeps a London showroom on Lots Road.
Every Linwood design begins as original artwork in that Hampshire studio. The team still sketches and paints by hand, working in watercolour or gouache until the look of a design is right, before it goes out to be woven or printed. Many collections are produced in Britain, the rest in Europe and further afield through mills the company has worked with for years.
It has moved a long way on fire retardancy. Most Linwood fire-retardant fabrics now reach the required standard without added flame-retardant chemicals or a back coating, the back-coated cloths that were used historically are being phased out, and no new collection is developed using them. The leather collections are made from offcuts from the fashion industry.
Linwood publishes more about a fabric than almost any house we hold. Every one of the pieces in our library carries a fire rating and an aftercare note, and nearly all of them add composition, width, vertical repeat, a Martindale figure and an upholstery grade. When a customer asks whether a cloth will take a family sofa, this is the house we can answer for on the spot.
