About Sanderson
Arthur Sanderson founded the business in 1860, importing luxury papers to London. A textile printing factory was established at Uxbridge in 1919, producing the company's first fabric range, first called Eton Rural Cretonnes and later Eton Rural Fabrics.
In 1924 Arthur Bengough Sanderson became the holder of the company's first Royal Warrant, as Purveyor of Wallpapers and Paints to King George V, said to be the first warrant granted for the supply of those products. Fire destroyed the Chiswick factory in 1928 and a new wallpaper factory was completed at Perivale by 1930. Sanderson bought Morris and Co in 1940, the year after it had gone into voluntary liquidation.
The archive holds fabrics, wallpaper, log books and printing blocks going back to the nineteenth century, and is the reference point for the design studio. Printed wallpapers and fabrics are still made at the group's own UK factories, Anstey Wallpaper Company in Loughborough and Standfast and Barracks in Lancaster. Walker Greenbank acquired Sanderson in 2003, and that group renamed itself Sanderson Design Group in 2020.
Sanderson is the safe answer that is not a boring one. It is the house we suggest when a customer wants a recognisably English room, and because the cloth is printed in this country a reprint takes weeks rather than months if a job needs more.
