About this colour

This shade reads as a burnt clay tone with enough brown in it to keep the colour calm and usable, and enough red to stop it feeling dull. On a wall, it absorbs light more than it reflects it, so the colour comes over as close and full-bodied rather than airy. In a north-facing room it can look deeper, slightly muted and more cocooning, while in south-facing light the warmer orange-red notes open out and the colour feels livelier. It sits well beside tan leather, fawn linen, oatmeal, dark oak and walnut, and it also gives good contrast against pale cream or chalky off-white woodwork.

How to use it

Use it in a study, dining room or hallway where you want warmth without glare. It works neatly with stained timber, painted skirting or upholstery in sand, camel, russet or muted olive.

A warm terracotta like this gives walls a settled, earthy depth.
