Makoto Tortoiseshell
Tomoko FabricSCF0041-04
Makoto Tortoiseshell brings together a deep charcoal ground and warm stone-coloured irregular forms in a densely textured woven surface. The close-up reveals contrasting yarns and a broken, organic pattern that shifts between sharp fragments and softer blurred edges.

About this fabric
At 529 gsm, this is a substantial textile with a visibly compact construction and 92 threads per centimetre, making it particularly suited to upholstery. The charcoal and near-black areas give the colourway a cool, deep base, while the taupe-stone accents prevent it from reading as flat or stark. Its abstract, vertically energetic motif has a 38 cm vertical repeat and 16.5 cm horizontal repeat, creating lively variation across a chair, headboard or sofa. With a 137 cm usable width and a standard 30 m length, the fabric offers practical scope for larger upholstery projects.
How to use it
Use Makoto Tortoiseshell on a statement armchair, occasional chair or sofa, pairing its charcoal depth with warm timber, aged bronze and stone-painted walls. Echo the lighter taupe threads through plain cushions or a softly neutral rug rather than introducing another busy pattern.
A substantial charcoal-and-stone woven for upholstered seating, where its irregular pattern adds depth without relying on bright colour.

Pairs well with
A pattern needs somewhere for the eye to rest, so these are the plains and textures that sit beside Makoto Tortoiseshell without fighting it. Mixed across the houses we hold, which is the part a single supplier's book cannot do.

Paint that goes with it
Two ways to take the room. Both colours are from houses we hold, so a pot can come off the same order as the cloth. Screens shift colour, so treat these as a direction and bring the cloth to the shelf before you buy the paint.
