Calcutta Taupe

Calcutta Fabric

Calcutta Taupe is a quietly textured upholstery fabric with fine horizontal striations and tiny dotted flecks running through the weave. Its warm taupe ground reads soft and grounded rather than flat, giving the cloth an understated, tailored look.

About this fabric

Woven in a blend of 40% Viscose, 34% Polyester, 20% Cotton, 3% Acrylic and 3% Nylon, Calcutta Taupe has the substance and finish expected of a hardworking furnishing fabric. The cloth shows a narrow horizontal stripe effect, with small slub-like flecks that catch the eye against the matte taupe base. At 137 cm wide and with a 25,000 Martindale rub test, it is well suited to everyday upholstery, including chairs, cushions and refined banquette seating. The colour is a muted brown-taupe with a gentle warmth, so it feels calm and contemporary rather than stark or greyed out.

How to use it

Use this taupe on a sofa or armchair where you want texture without strong pattern, then pair it with oak, linen and darker bronze accents. The warm, low-key tone also works well in layered neutral schemes that need a little depth.

A versatile taupe with a subtle slubbed stripe that sits neatly on clean-lined upholstery.

Pairs well with

A pattern needs somewhere for the eye to rest, so these are the plains and textures that sit beside Calcutta Taupe without fighting it. Mixed across the houses we hold, which is the part a single supplier's book cannot do.

Paint that goes with it

Two ways to take the room. Both colours are from houses we hold, so a pot can come off the same order as the cloth. Screens shift colour, so treat these as a direction and bring the cloth to the shelf before you buy the paint.
