About this colour

This shade sits around a softened black-brown grey, with enough warmth to stop it feeling stark and enough depth to hold its own on a wall or on joinery. In north-facing rooms it can turn cooler and more slate-like, with the brown notes receding and the grey becoming more apparent. In south-facing light it feels warmer and fuller, picking up the taupe side of the colour and softening the contrast against pale trims. Because it is quite light-absorbing, it works best where you want a room to feel settled and enclosed rather than brightened. It sits well beside walnut, dark oak, aged brass and upholstery in camel, stone, tobacco or deep olive.

How to use it

Use Vesuvius in a library, snug or dining room, especially on walls behind bookcases or on painted woodwork where a darker grounding colour is useful. It also pairs neatly with linen, tweed and leather tones, and with timber furniture in mid to dark stains.

On a wall, Vesuvius reads as a deep, restrained neutral with a warm taupe undertone.
